basic authentication with olap failing

Hi,
I've got a situation where I am trying to connect from my local PC to
a windows 2003 server that is running SQL Server2k EE with Analysis
Services and IIS.
I have followed a number of Microsoft articles for configuring http
access to the Analysis Services, and my msolap.asp file is located
correctly and I have tested that I can access it with both anonymous
and basic authentication enabled on the site. The connection string I
am using is pointing to the correct directory for my msolap.asp file.
I can type the url to my msolap.asp file into my browser and do not
get any errors, both on anonymous or basic authentication access (I
need to have basic authentication).
The problem lies in the fact that when I try and access my web site
pages that contain the OWC components, if I turn on basic
authentication on msolap.asp I get unspecified errors and cannot load
data. If I leave the msolap.asp file as anonymous access and my web
site virtual directory with basic authentication, I am promted to
login and the data displays correctly. However, if I refresh the
page, I am prompted to login again - which should not be happening.
The frustrating thing is, if I remove the dynamic OWC component from
my page but leave the static OWC component, then I do not get prompted
to log in multiple times and it behaves as it should.
I know I've outlined a few problems in this post, but I'm pretty new
to OLAP and I'm just trying to get it running on a server.
Thanks in advanceTo clear up a few items, it appears there is no impact of the OWC
component being dynamic or static, as either one of them results in
multiple login prompts. If I disable basic authentication on
msolap.asp, then the strange behaviour I notice is that when I have the
site marked as "Trusted" in my browser, I am prompted to login on first
page access (which is correct), but then prompted to login again on any
hyperlink click on the page or on a page refresh. If I remove the
"Trusted" status, then I am only prompted to login on first access to
the site and on any subsequent refresh of the page in the browser.
Is this the correct behaviour for OWC/OLAP components?
Thankssql

Barcode not Printing when exported to PDF

This seems to be an issue for a lot of people. Is there a workaround for
this?
I am using 3of9.ttf it is on the report server and my local machine. the
barcode shows up inthe web view but disappears in the saved/printed pdf.Hi Eric,
Based on research, this issue seems to be a known issue that is caused by
Acrobat related driver. Usaing different Acrobot version may have different
results. When exporting a report with a barcode font (AdvI25d_.TTF) to a
PDF, the first two characters of the font run together and become
unreadable. The workaround at present is using TIFF image other than this
Font.

Wei's suggested work-around of converting to tiff doesn't do the job
completely, as the barcode printed from the tiff file is not
scannable.

Bandwidth Required For ODBC Access

Hi,
I need to setup an ODBC link over our Internet connection between MS Access
(local) and a mysql server (Remote - the local PC has the mysql ODBC driver
installed). What kind of bandwidth requirements am I looking at? Will it
function over a 64k leased line? If this would be slow, could there be any
major impact on other uses such as web and email?

It's certainly feasible to run an ODBC connection over a 64k link, and I
have done so. You haven't really given enough information to answer the
question. You need to know how many data requests will be issued and how
much data will have to be retrieved for each request.
You may need to consider the time distribution of the requests, will
they all occur at the same time? How long are the users willing to wait
for their data? What else will be using the line at the same time? Will
those users be prepared to wait for their data?

Thank you for your response. The ODBC access will supplement web based
access, where the web server will be on the same local network as the MySQL
server. The web access will be used mostly for simple queries. The ODBC
access is to be used for more complex ad-hoc queries. So in answer to your
questions, only one person is ever likely to access the mysql database via
ODBC at a time. The reports do not need to be done instantly, so time is not
too much of a worry.
I'm assuming that these are all good answers. What number of users and level
of data did you pass over the 64k link?

You can work out the data capacity of the link by looking at the
structure of the tables returned and the number of records retrieved.
The number of users isn't important, just the amount of data they use.
That's very difficult to predict with ad hoc reports. Either the person
creating the reports needs to understand the bandwidth they have
available or you have to find a way of saving bandwidth. Have you
considered replicating the mysql database to a local server?

people paying the bills thought it was "acceptable", but the actual users
thought it abominable. The users didn't find it acceptable until the lines
(one each to three separate user locations) were upgraded from 64KB to T-1
(which is about 1.5MB, as I recall).
A better-written application would have performed better, but the same
people paying the bills wouldn't pay for some obvious improvements, such as
opening the main/first form on a single record rather than on an entire
15,000 record table. But only parts of the app were so poorly
designed/implemented.

Adhoc queries that returned resonable amounts of data felt OK to me. The
important point is to send the query to the server and have it do the grunt
work - avoiding queries where raw data is returned to Access while it does
the grunt work. However the typical Access form performed substantially
worst - edge of usability.
When you try going long distances or overseas (large latency in the
internet - distance being defined as #routers, hops etc. as opposed to miles
per-se) then things become very bad, because by default Access does not take
care to minimize the amount of round-tripping. So the time is multiple
latency plus data transfer.

Yes, but the mysql server is a hosted solution, so we're limited in the ways
that we can get hold of the data. It's either CSV copies of the tables or
the ODBC read only link to the live data. Apart from setting up a SQL server
locally, I'm not sure what else we would need to do. Are you suggesting that
the local SQL server would use ODBC just to make straight copies of the data
or that we would have to download and manually import the CSV files? Under
the latter, it is more likely that we would just import the CSV files
directly into MS Access.
When you say you can work out the data capacity of the link, is there a
rough formula that can be applied. i.e. a certain number of records from a
certain number of tables would require x amount of bandwidth?
Thank you for your continuing help.

Thank you for your comments. How do you ensure that the query is sent to the
server to do the work and not have the raw data returned to Access? Is it
something that you have to build into the query?

MySQL supports replication, so that any changes to a master database are
automatically copied to a slave database. You would keep the master
database on the server and run all of your queries against the slave
kept on your own site. You need to talk to your hosting provider about
that, they may have other customers doing the same thing.
If your data changes slowly it may be OK to copy the data to CVS files
once per day and to copy them when the 64k bandwidth isn't being used
for anything else, perhaps overnight. That way you could run queries
against a database that is less than 24 hours old and not need to use
bandwidth during the day.

The amount of data to transfer depends on the size of the records. List
the fields in each table and determine the number of bytes required for
each of them. Multiply that by the number of records retrieved. Decide
how long it will take to transfer that data over a 64Kbit (8Kbyte) per
second link. Take account of other people using the same link for other
purposes.

Backups/Restores of remote hosted SQL Server to Local?

Is there any way to backup a remote SQL Server that is on a hosted account to a local drive? We have a web hosted account that has a SQL Server that we do not have full admin rights on, just dbo access to the data and structure. We would like to be able to do backups and restores to our local development server if possible. Perhaps vis DTS or some similar means? WE cannot use the normal backup/restore as we do not have right to these fucntions nor can we access the servers local drives directly. You could certinly use DTS to transfer all objects from one server to another, presuming that the host allows SQL Server access through their firewall.|||

Yes the yallow that and support DTS packages.

Wha tis the best way to configure these to allow transferrring all data and objects? What needs to be setup first in terms of an empty database, user accounts, etc for this?

Backups using SQL Server

Is it possible to backup a remote SQL Server database to my local system? It is not working for me as I'm getting error as given below

Cannot open backup device 'path'. Device error or device offline

Any idea??

No. MSSQL only backs up locally. You could have it save to an ftp directory and download it that way.

Have a good day.|||

I tried but it didn't worked. Can you post the steps here?

|||I you are using the SQL Manager use should be able to right click on the database that you wish to back up and hover over all tasks. Then select backup, This will bring up the screen for backups. On that screen click the select device button and set the device to the directory that you want to backup to. Then name the file whatever.bak. Start the backup and you are done. Open up the folder and the file will be where you selected it to save to. If that folder is available via FTP then you can download it.

I hope that this helps.

Backups causing connectivity issues

I'm maintaining a database with an automated backup process.

Periodically, it does a "BACKUP DATABASE" to a local file and then do a file copy across the network to another system. This file is 2.7GB and when it is being copied it causes network problems; specifically ADO connections to the database get broken.

Does anyone have experience with this kind of issue?A DOS Copy is causing a network problem?

I wouldn't think so.

Where's the code, and what's the specific error message.|||A DOS Copy is causing a network problem?

I wouldn't think so.

Where's the code, and what's the specific error message.

I have a C++ ADO client application that gets:

Database COM exception.
HRESULT = -2147467259 (0x80004005)
[DBNETLIB][ConnectionRead (recv()).]General network error. Check your network documentation.

This client application is running 24/7 on many different workstations. They all encounter this error and shutdown at the same time. It seems to only encounters this error during the file copy operation I mentioned. I assume that the 2.7GB file copy consumes so much bandwidth that it disrupts other network activity. CPU use on the server is low. I wouldn't have guessed this as the problem but that is certainly what the symptoms suggest.|||I still wouldn't put any money down on that...

But as check, why not copy the file over during periods of low activity...|||I still wouldn't put any money down on that...

But as check, why not copy the file over during periods of low activity...

We do. We copy it over at midnight. The C++ client app I mentioned needs to run 24/7/365 though and it can't lose network connectivity to the database (this is all on a LAN and has UPS).|||OK...out of the box thinking...is there anything else affected?

You sure it's not something to do with the way the app is constructed?

I'm no network guy, but can you put a sniffer on the network?|||DOS copy may be the same as Windows copy. As I understand things, Windows copy eats a lot of bandwidth in parity checks, and whatnot. Can you use FTP to deliver the database to an FTP server? That may be a lighter connection.|||Thanks guys. Those suggestions might work but the network guys agreed to just backup to a separate local hard drive. That will definitely spare the network.|||For files of these sizes to move over LAN people usually set up a dedicated NIC on a different subnet. If you spare a couple of bucks wisely (SQLLiteSpeed) you may shrink the size of the backup file down to around 500MB.

Backup to Share with SMO fails, but works to local hard disk

I have a short program (vb.net) which backs up an SQLExpress database. It works fine if the destination is a file on the local drive. However, it always fails if the destination file is a network share or a mapped share. The same program verifies the share is available by trying to read and write a small file before performing the backup.

This is a stripped down version of the code

Dim svr As Server = New Server("Servername")
svr.ConnectionContext.LoginSecure = false
svr.ConnectionContext.Login = TextBoxBULogin.Text
svr.ConnectionContext.Password = TextBoxBUPwd.Text
Dim bkp As Backup = New Backup()
bkp.Action = BackupActionType.Database
bkp.Database = TextBoxBUDatabase.Text
Dim x As New Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.BackupDeviceItem(destfilepath, DeviceType.File)
bkp.Devices.Add(x)
bkp.SqlBackup(svr)

The exception generated is an SMO.FailedOperationException and reads "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: Cannot open backup device 'Z:\v1tbcontacts00.bak'. Device error or device off-line."

Where "Z:\" is a network share. If the backup device string is set to "C:\v1tbcontacts00.bak" the backup succeeds.

Have you tried to use Transact-SQL to backup to the share? In any case you may find it better to back up to the local drive, then copy the backup file using operating system commands to the network share for performance purposes.|||

Henry,

using SQL authentication will make SMO to use the SQL Server Sevice account to authenticate on the network share, so although you might be able to check the network share for existance within your application, the credentials used for this is not used for making the backup on the file share.

Client application (Windows token) --> SQL Server using Windows authentication and connected with Windows Authentication --> SMO uses the Windows credentials of the connected client to access the share

Client application (Windows token) --> SQL Server using Mixed Authentication and connected with SQL Server Authentication --> SMO uses the SQL Server Service account credentials of to access the share

The practical solution to my issue is to perform a database backup to the local hard disk and then copy the backup to a share.

Better still. the nugget of information about how authentication works with SMO explains why the problem occured in the first place.

Thanks

Backup to networkdrive possible?

I can only see my local drive(s). I have mapped 2 networkshares but
can't see them when trying to choose a location for my backup. Can a
filebackup be made directly to a mapped (or non-mapped) networklocation?
Tnx,

Don't just participate in USENET...get rewarded for it!Yes. You must manually type the UNC name for the target. Do not use drive
mappings since SQL may not know about them. Also, the SQL service account
must have rights to write files in the target directory.

To add on to geoff's mail.
You can map the drive and use it in Query Analyzer along with Backup
statement.
Say your network server name FINANCE and the drive is k$ then use the below
statement to backup,
Backup database HRMS to disk='\\FINANCE\k$\MSSQL\BACKUP\HRMS_BACKUP.BAK with
init
The below statement will succed provided you have rights on that drive.

Backup To Network Share

I would like to backup my databases to a network share (NAS) instead of local disk using Maintenance Plans created by Enterprise Manager. I have successfully used a UNC path to target the destination network share but have not been to figure out how to submit a logon to the network share before the backup is executed.

The SQL Server instance is running in the context of the local system account.

Can I insert a step in the SQL SQL job that is created by the Maintenance Plans that changes the Windows account that the backup runs under? If yes what command syntax would I use in the inserted step or is there another way to accomplish that I'm attempting to do?

thanks
HPTo do this you need the SQL Service to run as a network user account that has pemissions over the share.

That being said it is generally reccomended that you create your backup file locally and then copy it over the network using a DOS batch file that uses copy or some such method.

Backup to dump device

Hello:
I am trying to backup to a dump device using sqlserver 2000 to the local
disk.
I am using retaindays=3. I thought you need to use that with the init
command, but it is failing. So, I am using that alone and the backup is
ignoring the retention policy on the dump device and backing the files up
one after the other without removing those older than 3 days.
I keep getting the error message media has a date that has not expired.
Anybody now what is happening here:
Backup database x to xx
with
retaindays=3,
mediadescription = 'backupxxx'
medianname = 'backupxx'
thanks in advance for your help,
Steve K.The only thing that RETAINDAYS and EXPIREDATE does is that it won't allow you to overwrite before
that date. These option will not, in any way, automate deletion of old files or anything to that
effect.

I used SQL Server 7.0 before and could have sworn I had done that. But,
unfortunately I have lost my code since that time.
I will forget the idea.

You might want to verify in BOL, just to be absolutely certain. Just in case you haven't seen this,
the Maintenance Wizard does automate deletion of old backup file...

I will check that out tonight. Great. If it works, then that must have been
the way I did it.
I really appreciate your help.
