This seems to be an issue for a lot of people. Is there a workaround for
this?
I am using 3of9.ttf it is on the report server and my local machine. the
barcode shows up inthe web view but disappears in the saved/printed pdf.Hi Eric,
Based on research, this issue seems to be a known issue that is caused by
Acrobat related driver. Usaing different Acrobot version may have different
results. When exporting a report with a barcode font (AdvI25d_.TTF) to a
PDF, the first two characters of the font run together and become
unreadable. The workaround at present is using TIFF image other than this
Font.

You may want to contact Microsoft Customer Support Services (CSS) for more
information on this issue because they may have update on the processing of
resolving this issue with Acrobat because it is more dependent on their
support. I appreciate your understanding on this.
If anything is unclear or you have further questions on this, please feel
free to let us know. Have a great day!

Wei's suggested work-around of converting to tiff doesn't do the job
completely, as the barcode printed from the tiff file is not
scannable.

Bar Chart uses Same color on one machine, but renders OK on others
In some of my reports, I have both a bar and a pie chart. The pie chart
renders the correct color, howerver the bar chard renders only green for the
three bars when they should be different colors. This seems to be isolated
as other machines render the correct colors... Suggestions on where I would
go to troubleshoot this problem? Thankscheck to see if the color is standard, web, etc color. The system where it
doesn't display correctly might have a different color depth that doesn't
support the selected color,

Bad Installation, can't uninstall, can't re-install
Something happened to my SQL installation on my development machine, and I can't fix it. I can't uninstall, I can't re-install. I even booted safe mode, deleted the SQL directory and tried to install -- that failed too. The best I have been able to manage
is installing the client tools.
I have a regular server but I prefer to do development on a local installation so as not to slow the server down or clutter it with my experiments.
The client tools cannot see my real server. The curious thing is that an Access ADP that I run CAN see the server, and hit its database with no problem.
I'm running winXP with all the service packs.
The message that I get when I try to run EM or QA locally is:
[Microsoft] ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLAllocHandle on SQL_HANDLE_ENV failed.
I have no idea what this message means.
Can I forcibly uninstall everything do to with SQL Server and start over? Are there registry settings I have to kill as well? Or is my only choice to back up everything and then reformat and start over? That could take days! I have a LOT of software tools
installed on the development machine.

Bad Installation But Cannot Uninstall Reporting Services - Need He
I seem to have had a problem regarding my installation of SQL Server 2005 -
Developer Edition on my Windows XP Pro machine. I have tried to uninstall
either Reporting Services or all of SQL Server. However, it keeps getting
stuck in the Uninstall of Reporting Services and then does a rollback.
The error that I am getting in each case is as follows:
Setup failed to read IISMEMMAP TABLE. The Errorcode is -2147024893.
Does anyone know how to get out of this so I can try to fix the installation?
Thanks for any advice.

backups getting huge
Is replication suppose to continually grow the database backups on the
distribution machine? I had to remove replication because the backups grew a
couple gig in about a months time. Am I missing something? I've tried this
twice now with the same results. Thanks.
for merge it may. For transactional it shouldn't if your log reader agent is
running frequently.

backups
Need to do sql server 2000 database and transaction log
backups. Using the backup wizard. Can back up on the
server machine no problem.
But I need to back up to another M/C which is visibly
connected by the network, and to a CD burner (which is
drive d on the server mc.) I have typed in a variety of
paths for each scenario and nothing is working.
Thank you
AnnAnn,
You need to use the UNC pattern.First create a share in that remote server,
make sure that the account under which SQL Server is running has the
required privileges/permissions on that share. After that, do the backup as:
BACKUP DATABASE <dbname>
TO DISK = '\\destserver\d$\dbbackup.BAK'

AnnAnn,
You need to use the UNC pattern.First create a share in that remote server,
make sure that the account under which SQL Server is running has the
required privileges/permissions on that share. After that, do the backup as:
BACKUP DATABASE <dbname>
TO DISK = '\\destserver\d$\dbbackup.BAK'

Backup/Restore Versus Detach/Attach
Hi All,
when I've to deploy my applications (c# and MSDE), generally I make a backup
on th edevelopment machine of the SQL Database the on the deployment machine
I make a restore and restoring from the backup I get my database up and
running (so boiring that I've to change the data/log file path at any
restore...).
Are there any real differences if instead of backup/restore I detach the
database file from the development machine (running sql developer edition)
then copy the file on the deployment machine and then make an attach to that
file?
which one is the best way?
Thanks, Davide.

please remember to add the log file to your distribution too, as it's part
of the dabase files set... and reattaching without the log file can end in
attaching problems...
the restore scenario only requires a little more physical space as you have
to consider the backup size in addition to the database files size...
both scenarios are simple to run but you have to consider some potential
issues..
MSDE usually set the "autoclose" database property, where the full blown SQL
Server editions do not, so you'll end up with a database that does not
reflect this standard MSDE setting, but it could be a choice...
you do not inherit database settings/options/objects from the end user model
database but from yours...
this can bring up some problems regarding orphaned users you will have to
fix by use of the sp_change_users_login system stored procedure
(http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...ca-cz_8qzy.asp
, http://www.sqlservercentral.com/colu...okenlogins.asp )
personally I go this way, http://tinyurl.com/dyjjg , that will even help in

Backup to Network Resource from a Server Machine Service Account
SQL Server 2000 SP4
Trying to backup to a network resource when SQL uses the machine service
account. Obviously something like EXEC sp_addumpdevice 'disk', 'device_name',
'\\filer_name\share_name\path\file_name.ext' would be used but this doesn't
work because of permissions.
Fairly new to DBA stuff so please have patience with me.
How can you do this?
Regards,
Richard.
You would need to have SQL Server using a service account that has permissions on that share.

Is there anyway round this?

There you give a Valid Domain OS user and password to start the service. Now
stop and start the MSSQL Serevr service.
Note: That domain user should have previlages in the remote share to write

After this you try to execute the Backup database command in Query

that has the appropriate permissions to that share. A LOCAL account has no
permissions outside that box. So change it to a Domain account with the
appropriate permissions.

To solve the issue you have start the SQL Server service using an Domain OS
user which got write
access to the remote share.
So go to Control Panel -- Admin Tools -- Services -- MSSQL Server sercice--
Double click and select the "Log on" option.
There you give a Valid Domain OS user and password to start the service. Now
stop and start the MSSQL Serevr service.
Note: That domain user should have previlages in the remote share to write
the file as well as prev. to start the SQL server.
After this you try to execute the Backup database command in Query
Analyzer:-
Backup database <dbname> to Disk='\\backup\tmp\networkdatabase.dat' with
init ( With init will overwrite the backup file every time)

Services Using The System Account
Services that use the system account start in the system context (without
credentials). In Windows NT 3.5 and later, Windows NT services with no
credentials (no domain name, user name, or password) that attempt to connect
to network resources are denied access because they have no credentials and
they are using a null session. For additional information, click the article

Essentially the local system account has no credentials so cannot
athenticate to anything on the network.
Is there anyway round this?

Backup to Network Drive
Am trying to backup to a network drive as the other machine has loads of
space.
Am using:-
BACKUP database TO DISK='\\myserver\backup\database.bak'
Keep getting backup device not available, when can see it via Network Places
etc.
Am using Windows 2000 Pro on both machines.
Hi
The SQL Server service account needs to be a domain account, and must have
rights on the destination share.

OK. Then you need to setup SQL Server to use a local account that exists on

just a side note on Mike indications... all this works becouse of the
underlying OS gets somehow confused and a sort of "embezzlement" where 2
differents accounts, YourPC\YourAccount and OtherPC\YourAccount "share" a
kind of uniqueness becouse of netbios intrusion... a preventive netbios
connection, even on a share or using NET USE can help...
but this is not granted to work in future releases or even OS service
packs...

|||Not true - the user does NOT need to be administrator on both machines. If
you run SQL Server under the Local System account, it never has any network
credentials and cannot access either UNC paths or shared drives. But if you
run SQL Server as any other user, you can see the network (although you may
have to make this account a local administrator for it to run).
If you can set your remote machine up so that you can see the share (which
doesn't necessarily mean a matching username or password - you may be able
to allow access to "Everyone" or "Anonymous Logon" or "Guest"), you don't
even need an account on the remote machine. You certainly don't need an
administrator account there.
Ideally you should apply the principle of least privilege - run SQL Server
under an account with the least privilege it needs to do its job, then
create a matching account on the remote machine with access just to the
share.

OK. Then you need to setup SQL Server to use a local account that exists on
your machine. The same local account must exist on the other PC too, with
exactly the same password.
You change the account the SQL Server uses to login through Enterprise
Manager, Server Properties, Security Tab.

just a side note on Mike indications... all this works becouse of the
underlying OS gets somehow confused and a sort of "embezzlement" where 2
differents accounts, YourPC\YourAccount and OtherPC\YourAccount "share" a
kind of uniqueness becouse of netbios intrusion... a preventive netbios
connection, even on a share or using NET USE can help...
but this is not granted to work in future releases or even OS service

Ideally you should apply the principle of least privilege - run SQL Server
under an account with the least privilege it needs to do its job, then
create a matching account on the remote machine with access just to the
share.

Backup to Location over VPN
Hi,
I am having problems with creating a backup onto a machine that is connected to the domain via a VPN connection.
When i do the back up it does not recognize the directory that I have specified, yet when i use Windows explorer I can copy and paste to my hearts content.
I was just wondering if the backup of a database can be done to a location over a VPN.
Thanks in Advance

Backups are done under the account that SQL Server runs under, not the
account you are using when you log in to QA or EM. SQL Server is most
likely running under the local service account which knows nothing of the
VPN or the Domain.

Backup to an USB Device
Hi:
Can anyone help me with backing up SQL Server Databases to a Shared USB
Device over a Network. I am able to Map the USB Drive on the machine. However
when I am trying to configure Backup using the Maintainence Wizard it does
not show the Mapped Drive. I am using SQL 2000 Server with Windows 2003
Server SP1. Please let me know if this is possible.
Thanks
Mitul
Hi,
You'll have to enter the UNC path to the device and then the account
that runs SQL server needs to have permissions to the share.
You problem right now is most likely that you have mapped the USB drive
with a different account than SQLserver/SQL server agent runs under and
that's why it doesn't appear.

The article states that this needs to be configured with a Domain account.
However we don't have an domain environment, then will SQL Server Services
running under Administrator Account suffice.

Thanks
MitulHi,
You'll have to enter the UNC path to the device and then the account
that runs SQL server needs to have permissions to the share.

Thanks

common security context. Administrator is only valid for the local machine
and has no meaning across the network. In short, no, it won't work
reliably.
