Basic MSDE Setup Question on Windows Server 2003

Dear Colleagues:
This is such an SQL newbie question its not even funny. To begin with,
please forgive my informality as well as my lack of any specific error
messages, etc.. . I think the questions are academic (the specific error
messages and notes are strewn about my desk at work).
Okay, so here I am, I have a shiny new Windows 2003 Advanced server. So I
want to set up a tiny sharepoint team services site, simple enough. Its the
lightweight version that is
included in the Front Page 2002 CD and pooft, instant sharepoint and badda
bing, you have a small website that small workgroups can use. Please note,
this is not a super confidential eyes only website, so if I had lax MSDE
security, it would not keep me awake at night.
So I download the MSDE from Microsoft and realize that I need to provide a
password for the sa account. A switch after setup.exe.
First, is there a way that I can forego this password, that is to say, that
there is a way for me to install MSDE without a service account password.
I provided the password, the install went great, but now I have issues
associating the sharepoint services site to the MSDE. Obviously, the MSDE
needs to know that sharepoint team services is a good boy.
My problem is that I do not see any configuration options in the small MSDE
engine, so the question here is, other than going to SQL 2000 full blown
where I can tweak things, is how to I tell MSDE that
the team services site, via IIS 6 (running in IIS5 mode) is okay to use it.
Ideally, my goal would be to install MSDE without having to provide a
password, but any advice that could be given would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Roger
If you are trying to "configure" the installation of MSDE you need to get a
copy of the enterprise manager from a SQL 2000 CD or something and you can
then use that to connect to the MSDE database and configure it. MSDE itself
does not come with these tools as it is the "lite" version of SQL, but the
enterprise tools can be used with it to configure it.
Hopefully you have an actual SQL 2000 Server on your network somewhere that
you can use to connect to your MSDE database...

To my knowledge, there is no way to install MSDE (or the full blown SQL Server, for that matter), without an sa password. It used to be that you could leave it blank, but that is obviously a security risk and that option has been eliminated.
As for your other question, it sounds like what you need to do is grant database access to the system account that your IIS server is running under. To do this, you can use the osql tool.
Go to a command prompt and type:
osql -U sa -S (local)
Note: If you provided an instance name during your installation, you should use (local)\<instance name>
You will be prompted for the password.
Next type the following 2 lines, replacing <account_name> with the name of the windown account that IIS is running under.
sp_grantlogin '<account_name>'
go
At this point, IIS should be able to connect to your MSDE installation. From there, it's hard to say what you might need to do. Presumably you need a database created within the database server. And after that is created you will need to grant database access to the login you created above. You can do that with something like:
sp_grantdbaccess 'Corporate\JeffL', 'Jeff'
GO
sp_addrolemember 'db_owner', 'Jeff'
GO
If you're not familiar with these types of operations, it might be best to install the full-blown SQL Server so that you can use the GUI interface to perform these operations.|||If you are trying to "configure" the installation of MSDE you need to get a

Basic authentication.

The documentation for Analysis Services seems to suggest that windows authentication is no longer the only way of accessing AS.

I'm trying to confirm whether or not it is possible to login to AS with basic authentication. If so, what are the constraints (eg is this possible only via IIS).

I'd also like to find out if http access is restricted to enterprise edition only like it was in AS2000, or has the scope been widened in AS2005.

Thanks,
Terry.
Basic authentication only works for http/https connectivity (where the username and password are passed to IIS for impersonation).

For native connections (when you directly connect to AS2005) the user name and password are ignored if specified in the connection string.

(and when connecting to local cube files, the password is used as decryption key)

Adrian Dumitrascu.|||

Thanks Adrian. That helps.

I'm keen to find out if http/https connectivity (via IIS) will be available in the standard edition in AS2005. Is this information available at present?

Terry.

|||Yes, http/https connectivity will be available in AS2005 standard edition.

basic authentication with olap failing

Hi,
I've got a situation where I am trying to connect from my local PC to
a windows 2003 server that is running SQL Server2k EE with Analysis
Services and IIS.
I have followed a number of Microsoft articles for configuring http
access to the Analysis Services, and my msolap.asp file is located
correctly and I have tested that I can access it with both anonymous
and basic authentication enabled on the site. The connection string I
am using is pointing to the correct directory for my msolap.asp file.
I can type the url to my msolap.asp file into my browser and do not
get any errors, both on anonymous or basic authentication access (I
need to have basic authentication).
The problem lies in the fact that when I try and access my web site
pages that contain the OWC components, if I turn on basic
authentication on msolap.asp I get unspecified errors and cannot load
data. If I leave the msolap.asp file as anonymous access and my web
site virtual directory with basic authentication, I am promted to
login and the data displays correctly. However, if I refresh the
page, I am prompted to login again - which should not be happening.
The frustrating thing is, if I remove the dynamic OWC component from
my page but leave the static OWC component, then I do not get prompted
to log in multiple times and it behaves as it should.
I know I've outlined a few problems in this post, but I'm pretty new
to OLAP and I'm just trying to get it running on a server.
Thanks in advanceTo clear up a few items, it appears there is no impact of the OWC
component being dynamic or static, as either one of them results in
multiple login prompts. If I disable basic authentication on
msolap.asp, then the strange behaviour I notice is that when I have the
site marked as "Trusted" in my browser, I am prompted to login on first
page access (which is correct), but then prompted to login again on any
hyperlink click on the page or on a page refresh. If I remove the
"Trusted" status, then I am only prompted to login on first access to
the site and on any subsequent refresh of the page in the browser.
Is this the correct behaviour for OWC/OLAP components?
Thankssql

Barcode Font can not be converted into PDF format

Hi All,
I installed one truetype fonts "Bar Code 39" in my PC under folder
c:\windows\fonts. I used this font for bar code print purpose. It can work
perfect if I print the report direct to printer, or export it into
TIFF/EXCEL format. However, if i want to convert the report into PDF file,
then I could not find the bar code in the PDF file.
Any idea?
Thanks in advance.
LukeTry installing the font on the server as well.

report correctly - sometimes, after you put a new font on a server,
you need to both:
= OPEN the font from the fonts control panel AND
= REBOOT the server before it 'knows' about the new font.
Reporting Services does not embed fonts in PDF files (which is a
great
lack).
Anyone viewing the report must have the same fonts you designed it
with, or you will see some font substitution.|||Reporting service does not embed fonts. So you need fonts on every
computer that the PDF is going to open.

Bad performance with SQL Application when connecting from client

Hello,
I've a problem with a application witch uses SQL Server 2000 STD. Other
applications on the same SQL instance have no problems.
Windows 2000 SBS SP4
SQL Server 2000 SP3a
- Running the application from console or TS session on the SQL server is
fast.
- Named pipes connection or tcp/ip connection no difference
- shut down other applications on the server has no results in performance
- New installed test server with SBS 2000 gives no problem
- The performance of the server like not the problem.
Could you explain your question, please?
For example, what kind of conection do you use in the app.? , etc...

Bad Installation But Cannot Uninstall Reporting Services - Need He

I seem to have had a problem regarding my installation of SQL Server 2005 -
Developer Edition on my Windows XP Pro machine. I have tried to uninstall
either Reporting Services or all of SQL Server. However, it keeps getting
stuck in the Uninstall of Reporting Services and then does a rollback.
The error that I am getting in each case is as follows:
Setup failed to read IISMEMMAP TABLE. The Errorcode is -2147024893.
Does anyone know how to get out of this so I can try to fix the installation?
Thanks for any advice.

backups through EM on remote registration

I have installed Sql Server 2000 evaluation copy on Windows XP, which I use to monitor other sql server 2000 installations (on Windows 2000) through Enterprise manager version 8.

What has been noticed is that if you try and set up a backup job through enterprise manager you do not get the option to remove inactive transaction log entries (yes the database's use full recovery models). Also if you select the verify backup option, it is not included within the job.

This is the same if you try the above on the local instance. This is not a problem as you can use the server installations, but what I am wondering is:

1. Has anyone come across this before?
2. Is it sql server 2000 on XP?
3. Is it the evaluation copy that is causing the problem?
4. Is it none of the above but indeed a far more complex reason which will mess with my head?

As always your help / knowledge is very much appreciated. As to verify, take a look at Database Maintanace Plans - there you can make it a part of your scheduled job. As to Inactive entries, actually it gets into your scheduled job, it is a default option when backing up transaction log - so you cannot see it in script that was generated by EM. Test for yourself - set up job without checking Remove inactive entries option and you can see that NO_TRUNCATE option is included in your command. Hope that it clears matters up a bit. Regards mojza|||Thanks for the reply mojza. I have no problems setting them up on the actual server, just on my PC through EM.

The verify problem is still an issue (i.e. You select it on your PC through EM but it is not part of the TSQL in the job).

However, the remove inactive transactions has got slightly stranger. On the server itself through EM, it is an option when creating a job and not touching the backup option (i.e. Database - complete is ticked by default). If you reselect it (click on it again or select another option and go back to complete) the option dissappears (which it should). Odd!!

As I said this is not really an issue but if anyone knows why I would appreciate the knowledge.|||I believe that Verify option in EM simply runs RESTORE VERIFYONLY command against backup set just completed so you can include this command plus some logic if you choose backup by T-SQL, otherwise you can set up Backup job in Database Maintanance Plan Wizard (it uses sqlmaint utility to perform its tasks which has -VrfyBackup switch to achieve backup set validation).

If 'remove inactive transactions' option is enabled in other backup type than transaction log, it's strange behavior and I've never seen that or heard about it. Evaluation edition or SQL on XP shouldn't be the cause. mojza|||The actual command it uses to berify if created on the server is:

select @.i = position from msdb..backupset where database_name='??' and type!='F' and backup_set_id=(select max(backup_set_id) from msdb..backupset where database_name='??')
RESTORE VERIFYONLY FROM [??] WITH FILE = @.i

I would be interested to know if anyone else can reproduce the 'remove inactive transactions' with a complete backup problem. Essentially all I did was right-click on the database, select backup database and under the options tab the option is there.

Backups not deleted.

I am running sql server 2000 on windows 2000. i have my backups set to delete after a week. they are not deleting, can anyone tell me why this is happening?? the backups filled the hard drive.open up your scheduled job, then open up the step that executes the backups. You should see an SQL statement like "EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_sqlmaint N'-PlanName...."

Post the statement for us to review, and while you are at it make sure that in the Advanced tab of the step editor you have an output file set to record results.|||here is the step.

EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_sqlmaint N'-PlanID 88C31DB1-FC24-42E7-AE79-CF2FA5E6C26B -Rpt "D:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\LOG\Backup MKS4.txt" -DelTxtRpt 2WEEKS -WriteHistory -VrfyBackup -BkUpMedia DISK -BkUpDB -UseDefDir -DelBkUps 1WEEKS -BkExt "BAK"'|||OK, here are a few things to try, in this order:
1) Drop the quotes around your -BkExt parameter value:
Change this: -BkExt "BAK"
...to this: -BkExt BAK
2) Specify a backup directory after your -BkUpDB parameter, like this: -BkUpDB F:\SQLBackups
3) Try changing -DelBkUps 1WEEKS to -DelBkUps 7Days

Also, I find it helpful to use the -CrBkSubDir, so that all my database backups are organized in different directories.

And again, save the output from your job to a file, so you can trap all the errors and messages that are generated.

Backups

Hi All,
We have setup Transactional Replication with queued updating subscribers option. Our Servers are in Failover cluster with windows 2000 AS. We are doing Full and Transactional log backups as usual. Can any one suggest what are the recovery scenarios, in ca
se of Publisher (if it is completely down, I mean all clusters are down) and User interactions to Subscriber immediately, so that data is more than of Publisher db.
Please provide us valuable suggestions.
Thanks,
John.
I'm not exactly sure what your question is. You loose me with this statement
:
"so that data is more than of Publisher db. "
With queued Updating, your Subscriber is essentially a mirror of your
Publisher's data. If your Publisher goes offline permanently you will lose
transactions that are on your publisher and haven't made their way back to
the Subscriber.
So, its not too hard to clone your Subscriber to rebuild your Publisher. To
do this you would have to drop your subscriber, copy the subscriber schema
and data to the publisher, re run your publication scripts on your new
publisher, and do a no-sync subscription.
If your Publisher goes offline for an extended period your chance of
bringing it back on line without conflicts increases. With Queued Updating
the conflict view only lets you view conflicts, not resolve them.

doing Full and Transactional log backups as usual. Can any one suggest what
are the recovery scenarios, in case of Publisher (if it is completely down,
I mean all clusters are down) and User interactions to Subscriber
immediately, so that data is more than of Publisher db.

|||The best suggestion I have is to look in BOL for the article about the
"synch with backup" option that can be used. This will not only walk you
through these scenarios, but explain how to create coherent, multi-server
backups.

Backup/Restore MSSQL database from domain host?

My domain host provides Windows hosting, including MS SQL database.
Unfortunately it doesn't provide remote connections to their MS SQL server.
I can see no method of retrieving my database structure, or the database
populated with data, from the hosts control panel.
I'm sure that I could upload a script to my webspace that would allow me to
download and upload my database structures and data, but I have no idea
where to find a script that would allow this.
I'm hoping to be able to develop the database locally, then upload the
changes to the online database. Later I'd like to be able to download the
database to make modifications or just farm the data within them.
Any ideas? You need to ask your provider this. If they don't have a story on how you ca
n backup and get the
database and also upload such a backup, then change provider.

Backup to tape with SQL and NTbackup

We want to use the SQL 2000 backup to tape capability to
backup databases directly to tape, but also allow
NTBackup (from Windows 2000 or Server 2003) to write to
the tape without over-writing the SQL data.
I know that I can use SQL backup to write the backups to
disk, but I cannot afford the disk space, as tapes are
far cheaper than disks...
Does SQL backup recognise that NTBackup data is written
to the tape? Or does NTBackup recognise a previous
session from SQL and then append?
If one recognises the other, then I can simply set the
timing to ensure that the more "stupid" of the backup
routines runs first...
Any help appreciated.Beginning with SQL 7 ( I beleive it was), the SQL group changed the SQL tape
backup format to match that of the OS backups, so they are now compatible,
you may put both on the same tape... (Just be sure to append, not
overwrite.)
